A Refreshing Departure from the Mainstream Trends
Junktion - Monologue EP
Junktion's latest EP, "Monologue," released on the cosmopolitan vinyl-only label Slow Town Records, is a testament to the label's commitment to preserving the classic, deep, and warm house sound. This marks the eighth release for Slow Town Records and the second collaboration with Dutch artist Hans Peeman, known as Junktion, hailing from Nijmegen.
The Slow Town Records label has earned a reputation for staying true to the roots of house music, offering listeners a nostalgic experience with each 180-gram vinyl release. "Monologue" keeps in line with this ethos, offering a sound that's a refreshing departure from the mainstream trends.
Junktion, who is celebrated for his sample-based, live instrument-infused deep house, lives up to the label's expectations. The EP features four tracks that flawlessly encapsulate his signature style and groove.
The EP begins with "Prologue," a jazzy house track with a funk and soul-infused beat that's impossible to resist. The combination of piano keys, vintage synth riffs, subtle background sounds, and a catchy guitar lick on the right side forms an infectious groove that sets the tone for the EP.
The title track, "Monologue," continues the journey with a warm, evolving four-bar riff that gradually introduces new samples and synths. The addition of trumpets after the first break adds to the track's summery and warm atmosphere. A midpoint monologue featuring movie quotes about the love for music enhances the depth of the composition. The blend of live instruments, captivating drum loops, and a subtle baseline demonstrates Junktion's exceptional craftsmanship in producing house music.
"Epilogue" showcases Peeman's knack for combining jazz elements with house rhythms and vocal bits. The track exudes feel-good vibes, reflecting the producer's musical richness. The numerous subtle components and background noises, combined with the continuous vocal bits, infuse the track with an irresistible drive, swing, and funkiness that will have you stomping your feet and bobbing your head uncontrollably.
Additionally, the EP includes a remix by Jean-Pierre Baroni, known as Mr. KS, a Southern Frenchman. Mr. KS injects the track "Monologue" with a faster tempo, delivering a club-friendly version that maintains the essence of the original while offering a slightly different take on the groove.
In summary, Junktion's "Monologue" EP is a shining example of authentic, soulful, and groovy house music. It seamlessly encapsulates the spirit of Slow Town Records, providing listeners with a delightful journey into the world of classic house music, elevated by the producer's mastery of live instruments and sample-based production techniques. This EP is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates the art of true house music.
